Packaging Requirements for Selling on Amazon, Meesho & Flipkart in India
Selling on Amazon, Meesho or Flipkart means your packaging has to satisfy the marketplace, the courier and the customer all at once. Get it wrong and you face rejected pickups, in-transit damage, SAFE-T or return claims, and rating drops. This guide covers the practical packaging requirements every Indian marketplace seller should follow.
The universal rules across all marketplaces
While each platform has its own policy wording, the core expectations are consistent:
- Use a proper corrugated box or courier bag sized to the product, not oversized.
- Seal all openings fully with strong adhesive tape so nothing can be opened or fall out in transit.
- Protect the product inside with bubble wrap, corrugated rolls, or void fill so it does not move.
- Keep the shipping label clearly visible on a flat surface and never seal over the barcode.
- Do not let your own branding cover the marketplace label or scan codes.
Following these five points alone prevents most pickup rejections.
Amazon (Easy Ship & FBA) packaging
For Amazon, products must reach the customer in sellable condition. Use a sturdy corrugated box for most items; 3-ply for light goods and 5-ply for heavy or fragile ones. Fragile items need cushioning on all six sides so the product never touches the box wall. For FBA, each unit and box must carry the correct scannable labels (FNSKU/shipping label) placed flat and unobstructed. Soft, non-fragile goods like apparel can ship in courier bags, but anything breakable belongs in a box.
Flipkart packaging
Flipkart expects tamper-proof, well-sealed packaging with the shipping label clearly visible. Use corrugated boxes for hard or fragile goods and sealed courier bags for soft goods. Fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap and boxed with cushioning. Avoid reused boxes with old labels still attached, as conflicting barcodes cause scan and sortation errors.
Meesho packaging
Meesho resellers and suppliers ship a high volume of apparel and low-cost goods, so courier bags are common and accepted for soft, non-fragile items. The key requirements are a fully sealed bag or box, the correct Meesho shipping label clearly printed and visible, and adequate protection for anything that can break. For hard or fragile products, switch from a bag to a corrugated box with cushioning.
Bag vs box: a quick decision guide
| Product type | Recommended packaging |
|---|---|
| Apparel, soft goods | Tamper-proof courier bag |
| Light hard goods | 3-ply corrugated box |
| Heavy or bulky goods | 5-ply corrugated box |
| Fragile / glass / liquids | 5-ply box + bubble wrap, all sides |
| High-value items | Box + cushioning + tamper-evident seal |
Labelling mistakes that get pickups rejected
- Label folded over an edge so the barcode will not scan.
- Tape stuck across the barcode, causing glare and scan failures.
- Old courier labels left on reused boxes.
- Smudged or low-quality thermal prints.
- Label placed on a seam or curved surface.
Print labels on a clean white background and stick them flat on the largest unobstructed face.
Why this matters for your seller metrics
Damaged or wrongly packed parcels drive returns, negative ratings and claim deductions, all of which hurt your seller score and Buy Box or visibility. Spending a few rupees more on the right box and cushioning is almost always cheaper than one damage claim plus a lost customer.
